The book depicts children of various ethnic backgrounds bringing their pets to a vet’s surgery. Many common procedures are shown, for example, a dog and a cat having injections, a rabbit having its teeth trimmed and a guinea pig having its claws cut. The vet explains that an overweight rabbit needs to eat less, and demonstrates how to clean a dog’s teeth to keep it healthy. The vet is shown examining a rat with a lump in her side. He explains to the little boy that she’s quite unwell and may not live much longer. A girl is told her cat must be left in overnight, and she is shown picking her up the next day.
