The first few pages of the book are intended to guide parents through an effective bedtime routine, and includes some simple relaxation techniques which should be carried out every night. The author recommends finishing the bedtime routine with the story featured in the book, which features the characters from the popular BBC programme ‘In the Night Garden’. The story is written using rhythmic, relaxing phrases, which come across as subtly hypnotic. The author suggests reading in a calm, soft voice. The character’s actions reflect the child’s bedtime routine, for example, Makka Pakka washes Igglepiggle’s face with some lovely warm water. I enjoyed reading the story to my daughter and found it extremely relaxing (both of us were sleepy and calm by the time I closed the book!) This unique book cleverly combines expert advice with a gentle, entertaining story that young children should really enjoy and identify with. Highly recommended.
