The gran in the story explains to her grandson what Parkinson’s is, how it affects her brain and body and her ability to carry out everyday tasks. She talks about how scientists are working hard to find a cure and how pills can control some of the symptoms. The book provides reassurance on many things that young children may get anxious about: explaining that you can’t catch Parkinson’s like you can catch a cold, that most people with Parkinson’s live a very long time, and that it doesn’t run in families. Some expected future changes in Gran’s behaviour are also discussed: difficulty in swallowing, smiling, writing and speaking, alongside reassurance that she’ll still be able to give cuddles.
