After Grandpa’s death, his beloved boat, The Periwinkle, is left unused by the quay. The boat is part of the history of the family: Grandpa would sail in her with his wife when they were young and they first took their grandson (the narrator of the story) out in her as a small baby. Dad decides it is time to renovate The Periwinkle, and the whole family set about making her smart and bright again. They take her out to sea, dreaming of Grandpa at the wheel looking well and young again.
