Anna wasn’t big enough to go to school (or work!) but her Mummy said she was getting too big to stay at home all day. It is time to start playgroup. Anna is concerned that there will be no-one there to help her put her shoes on, or that nobody will like her. Her Mummy reassures her and tells her not to worry, and she’ll love it when she gets there. They set off for playgroup and meet Mrs Sams, the playleader (who looks very friendly in the illustrations, and sits Anna on her lap). The book describes the activities and facilities at the group. When Mummy says goodbye, Anna looks concerned, but Tom (another new joiner) plays with her and they quickly become friends. Tom and Anna are chosen as Mrs Sam’s helpers as they are both very helpful. The children visit the toilets (one has an accident, and is depicted with damp trousers) and wash their hands. The children are shown jumping about and running, even though their playleader has told them to sit quietly. When Mummy arrives at the end of the session, she asks Anna if she has made anything nice. Anna confirms that she has: A friend! Anna asks if she can come back to playgroup again the next day, and runs home happily.
