Arabella and the Magic Pencil

Acknowledges that a new baby in the house can mean big changes, but these changes can be positive ones (although a period of adjustment is needed)

Arabella and the Magic Pencil

Author: Stephanie Ward
Illustrator: Shaney Hyde
Publisher: EK Books

Arabella, the precious daughter of a Duke and Duchess, is perfectly happy. She receives an elaborate magical wish for her birthday each year, and life is perfect. Then her baby brother, Avery, is born and the calm, order and peace is shattered (Arabella loves Avery, of course, but it is ‘sometimes very difficult to like him’.) Arabella wishes for a magic pencil that can make anything she draws become real, and sets about creating some beautiful scenes to play within. When Avery invades and disrupts her party scene, she accuses him of ‘ruining everything’ and angrily erases him. Now life is calm and quiet again,  but she misses her little brother terribly. She carefully draws his portrait with her magic pencil and he returns to her. Arabella vows never to erase him from her life again and draws him something special to show him how much she cares.

A sweet story featuring an independent and creative young girl, enhanced with pretty watercolour illustrations by Shaney Hyde.

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

  • With the arrival of her new baby brother, Arabella’s world changes dramatically. The calm and order she is used to disappears, and she feels resentful and angry.

Guidance:

  • It is easy to dwell on the negative side of having a new sibling, but there are many positives. Arabella really misses her brother when he disappears; she realises that life is better with him around.

Hope & Inspiration:

  • Arabella spends time imagining her baby brother in order to sketch his portrait. This makes her stop and focus on all the things she loves about him, and she truly appreciates him for the first time.

What is a Parachute Book?

A challenging experience can make a young child feel as if they are in emotional free fall. As a parent, you can’t stop them falling, but you can offer them a softer landing:
